I started out with a Speccy, 48K :)

After that it took quite some time before I got my next rig...
About 12-13 years I got my first PC:

A Compaq Prolinea 4/33d, with an Overdrive processor
Specs:
CPU: Intel 80386 @ 33 MHz, running at 100MHz thanx to the Overdrive processor
RAM: 16 or 32 MB (a massive amount at the time)
Graphix: Cirrus Logic 5420, 512 KB (Integrated)

Good for games like: Warcraft 2
(This rid is actually still alive, and serves as a typewriter for my missus grandfather     )

Then came a Pentium 133 MHz
This one was unclockable, because it was the last of the 66/100/133 MHz architecture.... (My brothers 166 was easily overclocked to 200, and I think it ran at 233 too)
RAM: 64 MB, later upgraded to 96 MB
GFX: Cirrus Logic 5430, 1 MB

This rig got me into shooters... I started playing Quake 2 at the impressive resolution of 320x240!!!
This is also when I started playing online... Action Quake (a superb mod to Q2, far superior to CS) was the thing that got me started.

A new GFX card (Cirrus Logic 5446, 2 MB) made it possible to play at 400x300... which meant the big ugly squares got a little smaller

That card didn't last long as I got hold of my brother's old Matrox Mystique, 4MB. This meant that I could now play Q2 at 640x480!!
Compared to when I started, this was amazing!!

Then My brother and my wife bought me an Orchid Righteous Voodoo 2, 12 MB, and suddenly gaming was awesome!!! Q2 at 800x600 with superb framerate!!!

More to come..... :)

Then came an Athlon 700, overclocked to 800 MHz with a chip!
RAM: 128 MB, eventually 256 MB
GFX: Asus Geforce 2 GTi, 64 MB (the best there was at the time!)

This rig didn't last that long, as I now had a job and could buy a rig through them....
I had also lost my broadband connection when I bought a house, so online gaming was out of the question....

This lead me to buying a laptop... with no gaming capabilities to speak of...

I eventually got my connection back, and 5 years ago or so I bought my current rig:

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz HT
Memory: 1 GB, later 2 GB Dual Channel
Hard Drive: 2x250 GB, HDS722525VLSA80
Video Card: Leadtek Winfast GForce 6800GT, 256 MB
Monitor: LG FLATRON L1910B (Digital)
Sound Card: Creative Audigy 2 ZS Audio Processor (WDM) Speakers/Headset: Creative Gigaworks S750 // Cosonic CD-610M Headset
Keyboard: ZBoard Gaming Keyboard, CoD 2 Keyset
Mouse: Razer Diamondback Classic

But when I a year later checked the papers closely, it stated that my GFX card ought to be a 6800 ULTRA
So I called my company and asked why the hell they were trying to rip me off? They said they didn't know about this, and contacted the supplyers...
They in turn claimed that the ULTRA card took too long to get from the manufacturers, so they inserted GT's instead so they could deliver the rigs on time!
Well, that wasn't my problem...
But to make a long story short, they cut the price on the rig with a few percent, and offered me a 7800GT, 256MB for free, as compensation 8) 8)

This card I had until I bought Soli's Sapphire Radeon 3870, 512 MB a few months ago... and that's what I have today!

This rig got me into BF2, and here I've stayed!!!
So my online career involves only 2 games (apart from a short attempt at Bf2142): Action Quake, and BF2!!

Got my first Windows-based PC in 1998 (had an old Commodore 128 before that), it was a "rental" (hem-pc)..
Image

The first FPS I remember playing was Quake / Quake 2.. And my first online FPS was Quake 2 I think.. Played it using a 56k modem.. The first telephone bill after playing online was huuuuge..! And also, there were bunnyhoppers even then.. :D

Might have played a few FPS on the Commodore, but unfortunately I don't remember what that might have been.. :)

Had a thing for Command & Conquer type of games from the start, Age of empires and such.. Played those a whole lot.. And of course my old favourites Sim City and The Sims series.. :D

Also remember playing Warcraft 2 at one point in my life (single player only)..

Okay, I can't remember such fantastic things as computer specs, as I'm not a hardware guru like yourselves.

However, the history:

Speccy, of course. Then Cannon Fodder on the Commadore 16+4.

Then onto pc games. At first, my mate was into them and brought games we could both play. It was Wolfenstein.

We took it in turns, but on your own playing is far better. So, my first game was COD, the original. Then UO. Loved these, then played online. Even better.

Played with an American clan (never joined though) called {TAMS} and they're still going now. They had a server with ~200 maps on random rotation, all sorts of custom maps, etc. It was great.

Then, my mate mentioend BF2. He explained it, and it sounded a bit boring. I bought it, spawned, and died.....

But, my first kit was sniper. I was running all over the place, and suddenly I got this drum roll sound, and a bloke saying I've been recommended for an award. I yelled out "Someones given me an award!!", as I thought it was the server admin doing it. Found out the reason finally.

COD2, never really got into it online, finished offline. Same with 4.

Not a big fan of playing 100's of games, like BF2 and then play a different one till I complete it.

So, BF2 is my main game, as we all have one, be it COD, Left4dead, Wow, or even Scrabble.

Others I've tried:
Full Spectrum Warrior - the first one. Loved it, will get the sequel later.
ShadowGrounds - Played demo, thought it was good, but realised it wasn't for me in the end, when I got the game.
TMNT - On order, its the latest version. Plenty of jumping involved, and yes, its those green Turtles.

Have played other games, but this is a FPS thread, so won't bore you

A bit off topic but...

[Aliens]heCKLes wrote:And my first online FPS was Quake 2 I think.. Played it using a 56k modem.. And also, there were bunnyhoppers even then.. :D
The best thing with Action Quake, and something I miss in BF2, is the fact that the body was divided into different (VERY different) hit zones (Head, chest, stomach and legs) and not only head and body.... Although the game was seriously bouncing (where certain kinda jumps even got their own names, like the "Urban Jump" named after a map) there was an easy way to prevent that! One hit to the legs meant you could neither jump nor run until you put on some first aid (which I think took about 5 seconds... crucial time in those small maps)
You actually limped around, bleeding, while bandaging...

First computer was the Vic-20 sometime in the very early 80's, then i got the C-64 around 84 i think.
Bought the Amiga 500 when it was released and i stuck with that until 1993 or 94 when i got my first PC wich i cant remember the specs on, all i recall is that it was an AST 486.

Still have the C-64 & Amiga 500 in working condition, but these days they are doomed for a life in the attic :)

On the gaming side i cant really recall...first FPS i recall playing is of course Wolfenstein, but im sure there was some FPS game on the C-64 or Amiga. Back in those days i only played adventure games, games like Space Quest, Police Quest, Larry etc.

First game i played online i think would be Diablo, wich cost a fortune to play on a modem :)
The first game i played seriously online and spent alot of time with was Unreal Tournament...and from there on it goes :)
