VGA cooler...

Postby [Aliens]Falconer » Sun Jan 25, 2009 9:46 pm

Yep, here's my next question....

As my gfx-card is burning up with the stock cooler, I really need to get a new one....

The card is an ATI 3870, and the coolers I've been looking at are:

ARCTIC COOLING ACCELERO TWIN TURBO VGA KYLNING
http://www.dustinhome.se/pd_5010166419.aspx

and

ZALMAN VF1000 LED HEATPIPE VGA RAM HEATSINK
http://www.dustinhome.se/pd_5010114650.aspx

Which one would you recommend? If neither, plz give me an alternative....
And no water cooling, or any other hyper expensive shite... I'm no Rockefeller ffs

ARCTIC COOLING ACCELERO TWIN TURBO VGA KYLNING

Cheaper and for those test i found its better, and also newer, 2 fans VS 1 fan means lower noise

Since there are no other comments or suggestions,
I'll take Solis advice and go for the Arctic Cooler!

I trust his judgement in this matter....

I bet I'm gonna regret this....

Ordered the cooler today :o :o :o

Hopefully I'll get it soon, and if the tests are reasonably trustworthy I'll finally be able to play again!!!
(Although I will lose the possibility of frying eggs on my GPU      )

Good God, what a difference the new cooler did!!

When idle, it lowered the GPU temperature by a lovely 10 degrees!

But the real shock was how well it performed when under pressure:
When under heavy load, it lowered the temperature by an astonishing 35-40 degrees!!!!!!!!

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it hotter than 65 degrees.
Before I switdhed cooler, it overheated as soon as I put it under some pressure...
With a maximum temperature of above 100 degrees!!!

Way to go, Arctic Cooler!!!!!

The one I ordered is supposed to really quiet, when running in silent mode...

I have mine on full speed right now, and it does make some sound.... It's not as noisy as the old one was on full speed, but I can still hear it.

Gonna switch to silent mode later today, and I'll let you know how it performs then 8) 8)

BTW, cheapest place to order it is on www.inet.se
Good, fast delivery, and you can pay directly via your bank. So no need to use the credit card

Ok, now I've tried running it in silent mode...

And I'm very pleased with the result!! 8) 8)

In idle mode it's about the same temperature as when running on full speed (give or take a degree or two),
and when I was putting it under as much pressure as I possibly could, it never rose above 69 degrees... which is just 4 degrees hotter than when running it on full speed!! :o :o :o

As for the noise, I am equally pleased!!
I can no longer hear the GPU fans, and considering the good results I'm gonna keep it in silent mode (7 Volts)

So far I've only talked about the good things, what about the downsides? Are there any?
Unfortunately, the answer is yes...
First, the cooler takes up a LOT of space... Depending on your mobo, the gfx card will use up 2-3 slots!!!
You definitely will have to take this in consideration if you intend to use it in a Crossfire/SLI configuration.

Second, depending on your gfx card the lowest memory heatsink might be too high, and thus getting in the way of one of the heat pipes.
I wasn't sure if that was the case on my card, but I made sure it wouldn't happen BEFORE I monted the heatsink!!
How? I simply grinded off a bit of the heatsink, at a suitable angle...
Depending on which way you apply the heatsink, you can either do it the easy way and cut one of the heatsink fins in half.... Or if you do it my way   , you'll have to grind off a small portion on every fin, as mentioned in a suitable angle....
I'll try and find the pic I saw on the internet, and post it here... If I hadn't found it, I could've made the same mistake as one guy I read about... he applied the fan even though one of the lowest heatsink was in the way, which ended up in a short circuit and a destroyed gfx card

Third, RTFM!!!!!
I know some of you have done this before, but it's still important to read the instructions....
And don't laugh when you read about the erasor.... it really does the trick in getting rid of the fat residue on the memories/VRM's.
Without it, you won't be able to get the heatsinks to stay in place....

This is how I did it:
(Not my card, but done the same way....)

Image

It might have fitted without doing it, but better safe than sorry... I don't want to start grinding down the fins AFTER the heatsink is mounted on the gfx card...
And since the cooling paste is preapplied, I really couldn't attach the fan to the card just to see IF it fitted without grinding...

If you turn the heatsink 90 degrees, you can probably get away with just cutting the leftmost fin in half
(and maybe just a wee bit of the next fin).

In conclusion, I'm VERY happy with the result!!!
