What CPU to look for?

Postby [Aliens]Falconer » Thu Jan 22, 2009 8:00 am

Hiya lads!

I just bought myself a new MoBo, as I'm trying to upgrade my rig budget style.
It was on sale  (used to be 100£, got it for about 18£ :o :o )

The problem is I have absolutely no idea what CPU to look for...
There are a gazillion different ones out there, with different speeds etc....
And the faster aren't always the more expensive ones...
All I know is that it's an Intel, with at least 2 cores, that I need...

What I'm looking for is what gives me best value for the money...
Not necessarily a new one, so a demo or a used one is fine with me :)
(TBH, the budget isn't tight... it's so slim it makes Kate Moss look like a fatty    )

So I'm asking for a little bit of your time to help me out :D
My new MoBo is socket 775, and supports multiple cores... FSB: 1333 MHz

Here's a link to the MoBo: http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=341874

Thanx in advance! :obey: :obey:

At minimum you need a core2duo 2.66 ghz if money are allowed i would go for a quad 6600 wich are an old but a great cpu, xytras can surely tell you how good it works as its also overclockable!
I use a intel c2d e6300 1.86ghz that i have overclocked to 2.80ghz and my cpu cant keep up with my graphic card i need a faster one, but for you it would be a great choice for your graphic card, but go as fast as your economy can go!

core 2 duo are the cheapest and if you can afford go for a intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2,67GHz Box 1 390:- its overclockable and have got great in reviews for gaming

Quad are more future safe as more games do support those(yes i have changed my mind want a quad these days, so i said it can we move on  )
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2,4GHz Box 1 695:- also overclockable and works well

Rest is up to your wallet, other than that you can go higher in ghz more is better ALWAYS

agree with Solifer (yes first time ever!) :blaah:

Go for quad if you have the money! Q6600 is cheap now and its still very good!

What is this world coming too?

As for your question Falc.. I have no clue.. I thought I was a computer nerd, but I guess I'm not anymore since I don't know crap about them (hardware mainly) and still use XP on a duo core..

Thanx for the input guys! Much appreciated!!

Problem is that I'm VERY short on cash :( :(
So atm I'm actually looking at Tradera to see if there might be something interesting there...

The Q6600 is the CPU I'd go for if I could, but I'm afraid I'll have to settle for a dual core...
unless I suddenly run into some unexpected cash....

On the other hand I'm not in a real hurry.... so who knows what might pop up?

Well, I've narrowed it down to one of these three.... as they cost about the same...

Question is which one to go for, and why?
(If the Quad really is so much better than the Duo, I guess I should scrap alternative no. 1!)

1. Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - 3 GHz, Cache L2 6 Mb Socket 775, 45 nm
2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4 GHz, cache L2 8 MB Socket 775, 65 nm
3. Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 - 2,33 GHz, cache L2 4 Mb Socket 775, 45 nm

TBH, I won't mind a slower one if i can find it cheap on Ebay etc...
But if I'm to buy a brand new one, it'll most likely be one of these....

I still say:

2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4 GHz, cache L2 8 MB Socket 775, 65 nm

I would go for 6600 also, but if you wait you should check around again as a newer quad might be released??

The Q8200 is a newer one, but it has a little less cache....

And the Q9xxx-series is way too expensive for me....

I've heard rumours about Intel releasing a new series of quads... budget ones...
But tbh I don't think they'll measure up to the before mentioned ones....

yes the q6600 is nice (got one too) i read in a forum sweclockers! that a person had the new Q8200 quadń and 3 other persons got the Q6600 and all 6600 lost to the new one al cpuś was stock klock!

and then i read about a test betvene an E5200 (pentium but stil cor 2 duo artecture) agenst Q6600 and the quad whit the same rigg as E5200 only got 800 piont in a 3Dmark test, cant remember whitch yearof 3Dmark! probebly 3Dmark06

so my money is on the Q8200 becurce 6600 is hard to find nowrdays!
