Hit Detection

Postby Aliens Wrig » Wed Apr 18, 2007 3:04 pm

All

Not sure if this subject has been raised before in writing through the forums (I sure we have had some chat on this) but am interested to hear your views on this. Since upgrading from a 2Meg (capable of 4 meg if you ask Oramge ) modem to an 8 meg wired router I have had major issues with my in game hit detection. At best, on a low ping server, it seems average/poor but more recently, it seems rubbish at best - even on low ping servers.

I note there is an article in the bf2s forums discussing the same subject and a recommendation to change a 'value' within one of the in-game files. I've only read the first 3 pages of this thread but it seems the widely held view is that this action has a positive impact on hits registering.

Has anyone tried altering their game files in this way and if so, i) was it a complicated procedure ii) did it produce an improved hit result and iii) is this within acceptable boundaries of ROE / punkbuster. And I guess most significant of all, what is the clan govenance on this? To my mind, if the whole community suffers varying degrees of this problem then its an in game issue that we have to live with and this fix (if it works) would therefore give an unfair advantage and could be construed as a (mild) cheat!

For me personally, I'm getting a bit fed up of getting the jump on peeps and having my cross hair all over them, only for them to spin and take me out in a brief burst! (In saying that and I'm sure for those of you who know me, you'll just advise me to improve my aim - bar stewards!).

Views please

I never play on a server where my ping is over 30. This stops this hit detector fault occuring... 8)

@ Sie cos I still don't know how to do the quote thingy

Wow mate, I don't think I've ever had a ping of 30 or below and I'm less than half a mile from my nearest exchange. You surely must have poorer pings than that when we play in other clan's servers for ladder matches?

I suppose another question on this theme and maybe a more relevant one is, do we all experience (excluding Sie) this hit detection problem to a lesser or greater extent? Mine is certainly greater and I doubt whether changing ISP is the answer.

Would appreciate some comment on this bf2s forum thread though - are people aware of this possible solution / have they tried it / do we consider it illegal? 8)

Not very often do I get problems with hit detection but when i do it doesnt seem to lag for me during play. just runs at a semi normal frame rate (which is normall for me lol) and doesnt identify a hit on the cross hair.

Precisely Max.

I've always suffered this to a certain extent but for me, the problem has noticably increased following a switch from modem to wired router when I upgraded my isp account to 8 meg (which I never get near to btw).

My hit detection problem seems more noticeable during the evening between 5pm and 10pm and I can only assume that this is something to do with packet loss and bandwidth problems. During these times all the bloody kids are probably downloading their i-tunes etc and soaking up the bandwidth.

I guess the only solution is to find an alternative specialist isp and pay a premium rate for uninterupted bandwidth. Anybody know of a suitable provider?

I have a wireless router, but my main PC is connected to the router via a cable.
